Gunmen have killed another traditional ruler in Ebonyi State, intensifying fears over rising insecurity in Nigeria’s South-East region.

The victim, Chief Josephat Ikegwu, was shot dead at his residence in Ishinkwo Community, Onicha Local Government Area, late Wednesday night.

Attack Carried Out Inside Victim’s Residence

According to sources within the community, the attackers struck at about 10 p.m., invading the monarch’s home and opening fire.

The traditional ruler was reportedly shot through his bedroom window while resting with his wife, in what appears to be a targeted and calculated attack.

Authorities Confirm Incident, Launch Investigation

The Chairperson of Onicha Local Government Area, Ikechukwu Ogbuofia, confirmed the killing, describing it as “an unfortunate incident.”

Similarly, the Ebonyi State Police Command acknowledged the attack, stating that an investigation is already underway.

Police spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the crime.

Recurring Attacks Heighten Security Concerns

The killing comes barely one month after another traditional ruler in the state, Chief Francis Igwe of Ndufu-Alike in Ikwo Local Government Area, was abducted and murdered by suspected kidnappers.

Igwe was reportedly kidnapped on his way to church, with his body later discovered and deposited in a mortuary.

Police had earlier confirmed the arrest of nine suspects in connection with that incident.

Growing Insecurity in Ebonyi

The back-to-back killings highlight a worsening security situation in Ebonyi State, where armed attacks and kidnappings have become increasingly frequent.

Residents and community leaders have raised concerns over the apparent targeting of traditional institutions, calling for urgent intervention by security agencies.

With two traditional rulers killed within one month, pressure is mounting on authorities to contain the escalating violence and restore confidence in local security systems across Ebonyi State.
