Former Kaduna governor remains in legal limbo as ICPC opposition stalls bail application

A Federal High Court in Kaduna has adjourned proceedings on the bail application of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai to March 31, 2026. The decision follows arguments from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) opposing bail, citing the seriousness of the charges.

During Tuesday’s hearing, El-Rufai’s counsel, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to grant bail, citing the former governor’s constitutional rights and the need to prepare an adequate defense.
The ICPC, however, opposed the application, stressing that granting bail could interfere with ongoing investigations into allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
El-Rufai was arraigned alongside Joel Adoga before the Kaduna Federal High Court under suit number FHC/KD/73/2026, facing charges including alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering.
Security in Kaduna was heightened ahead of the arraignment, with armed personnel stationed around the court to maintain order, while journalists were barred from entering the courtroom.

The ICPC confirmed that the former governor has been duly served with the charges and that both he and co-defendants are expected to face justice through due process.
A separate case has also been instituted against El-Rufai and Amadu Sule at the Kaduna State High Court, marked KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26, containing allegations of abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.
The Commission stated that both actions, instituted on March 18, 2026, are part of ongoing efforts to enforce accountability and combat corruption.
