An unspecified number of Muslim worshippers have been abducted after armed attackers invaded communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, turning the end of Friday prayers into a mass security emergency.
The attack occurred on Friday, August 21, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m., with the assailants reportedly moving through communities in the Dekara District, including Gidan-Zana and Kpenya, before abducting worshippers at a mosque.
The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said a joint security detachment had been deployed to assess the situation and conduct rescue operations. Police said the exact number of abducted persons had yet to be established.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the deteriorating security situation around the Borgu-Kainji axis, an area characterised by difficult terrain, extensive forest cover and proximity to Nigeria’s borders with neighbouring countries.
Attack Came Immediately After Juma’at Prayers
According to preliminary accounts, the attackers struck around the time worshippers were concluding their Friday congregational prayers.
Police said suspected terrorists invaded Gidan-Zana and Kpenya villages through the Dekara District and subsequently attacked a mosque in Kpenya, abducting an unspecified number of people while others fled into nearby forest.
Residents reported that armed men surrounded the worshippers and forced some of them away from the mosque towards surrounding bushland.
Reports from local sources also indicated that the attackers moved through neighbouring communities, including Dekara, Masaka and Sabon Gida, allegedly taking additional residents.
The pattern suggests that the incident was not limited to a single mosque but formed part of a wider armed operation across several settlements.
Police Confirm Abductions, Launch Rescue Operation
The Niger State Police Command has confirmed that people were abducted but has cautioned against speculation over the number of victims.
Police spokesman, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the command received a report concerning the attack and that joint security personnel had been deployed to the affected area.
According to the police account, some worshippers escaped into nearby forest, while the initial assessment indicated that no deaths had been recorded.

Other local accounts also identified community elders and the chief imam among those reportedly taken.
The reported targeting of elderly community figures has added another dimension to the incident, although the motive behind the alleged selection of victims remains unconfirmed by security authorities.
Survivor Alleges Lakurawa Involvement
A survivor quoted in reports attributed the attack to members of the Lakurawa armed group.
The survivor alleged that hundreds of armed men, carrying firearms, knives and machetes, attacked the community after Friday prayers.
He further alleged that some residents were killed during the assault.
These claims represent the account of a survivor and should be treated as allegations pending independent confirmation. They also conflict with the Niger State Police Command’s initial assessment that no deaths had been recorded.
The discrepancy underscores the need for a comprehensive security assessment of the affected communities before casualty figures or attribution can be treated as established facts.

The security situation has previously attracted concern from authorities. Recent reporting indicated that police had recovered bodies along the Wawa-Lumma road in Borgu and deployed tactical units alongside military personnel to strengthen security in the area.

The police have said joint security personnel have been deployed to the affected communities for assessment and rescue operations.
The immediate priority is to establish the identities and number of victims, locate the abducted residents and prevent further attacks.
But a successful rescue operation alone will not resolve the underlying security problem.
