Tuareg separatists and jihadist coalition tighten pressure on junta forces amid northern territorial losses

Mali’s military government and its allied Russian mercenaries have lost control of a key northern military installation in Tessalit after armed rebel forces overran the base, marking a significant escalation in the country’s worsening security crisis.
Strategic Northern Base Falls to Rebels
Armed fighters from Tuareg separatist coalition FLA (Azawad Liberation Front) and jihadist group JNIM (Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims) reportedly seized the Tessalit “super-camp” near the Algerian border on Friday.
Security sources confirmed that Malian forces and Russian personnel withdrew before the rebels entered the facility, avoiding direct confrontation.
Aguelhok Base Also Abandoned
Reports indicate that Mali’s forces were also compelled to abandon another military position in Aguelhok, located approximately 100 kilometres south of Tessalit, further weakening state control in the region.
Coordinated Offensive Intensifies Pressure on Junta
The latest developments follow coordinated attacks last weekend that targeted multiple military positions across northern Mali, widely regarded as the most significant offensive in nearly 15 years.
During the earlier assaults, rebel groups reportedly captured the strategic town of Kidal and inflicted heavy losses on government forces.
JNIM Blockade Raises Capital Tensions
The situation has been further complicated by a road blockade reportedly imposed by JNIM around the capital Bamako, restricting movement in and out of the city and heightening fears of further escalation.
Humanitarian and Security Concerns Grow
International agencies, including UNICEF, have raised alarm over civilian casualties and disruptions to essential services, including reported attacks on health facilities and school occupations in affected regions.
Military and Political Fallout
Authorities in Bamako have launched investigations into alleged internal complicity in the attacks, including claims involving active and former military personnel.
The conflict continues to unfold against the backdrop of Mali’s political transition following military takeovers in 2020 and 2021, which reshaped the country’s alliances and security strategy.
Regional Realignments and Rising Violence
Mali, alongside Burkina Faso and Niger, has strengthened ties with external partners and formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), deploying a joint force aimed at countering insurgent groups.
Despite these efforts, insurgent activity has continued to expand across the Sahel, including economic blockades targeting fuel supply routes in recent months.
With key military positions falling and insurgent groups expanding their reach, Mali’s junta faces mounting pressure both on the battlefield and politically, as security conditions in the north continue to deteriorate.
