ABUJA, NIGERIA —The National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Francis Wale Oke, has issued a strong rebuke of Nigeria’s political leadership, urging President Bola Tinubu to shift focus from electoral politics to the escalating security crisis ravaging the country.

In a wide-ranging interview, the cleric said Nigeria’s worsening insecurity cannot be understood through statistics or routine military briefings, but through what he described as the “human agony of grieving families nationwide.”

“Treat Every Victim as Your Own Child” — PFN Message to Government

Bishop Oke argued that the true measure of leadership in the current crisis lies in empathy, insisting that every Nigerian life lost or abducted should be viewed through the emotional lens of a president losing a child.

He said only such a mindset could compel decisive national action against banditry, terrorism, and mass abductions.

According to him, the normalization of violence has eroded national unity, driven away investors, and accelerated brain drain across critical sectors of the economy.

Nigeria’s Security Crisis Described as “National Moral Collapse”

The PFN president warned that the country is experiencing what he termed a “collapse of human value,” citing widespread killings, kidnappings, and rural displacement across multiple regions.

He pointed to repeated attacks on farming communities, insurgent activities in the North-East, and armed violence across the Middle Belt and parts of the South.

He said:

  • Farmers are abandoning farmlands due to fear of abduction or death
  • Entire communities in several states have been displaced
  • Schools and religious centres have become recurring targets

The cleric referenced long-standing unresolved abductions, including the Chibok schoolgirls and Leah Sharibu, as symbols of state failure to protect citizens.

Economic Fallout: Investors Fleeing Nigeria

Beyond security concerns, Bishop Oke warned that Nigeria’s instability is causing significant economic damage.

He said foreign investors are increasingly redirecting capital to more stable African economies such as Ghana and South Africa, citing insecurity and poor infrastructure as key deterrents.

He noted that Nigeria’s youth population—often described as a demographic advantage—cannot be fully harnessed without a secure environment.

The result, he argued, is rising unemployment, capital flight, and weakened economic competitiveness.

Military Efforts Questioned Amid Persistent Violence

While acknowledging military deployments across conflict zones, the PFN president questioned the effectiveness of current strategies.

He alleged that repeated rehabilitation of surrendered insurgents and integration of former combatants into security structures has weakened operational effectiveness.

He further suggested that infiltration within security systems has contributed to continued vulnerabilities in frontline operations.

PFN Declares National Fast and Prayer Amid Crisis

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria recently declared a three-day nationwide fasting and prayer programme, following an emergency National Executive Council meeting held on May 19, 2026.

The initiative, scheduled from May 22 to 24, was described as both a spiritual response and a public appeal to government authorities.

The PFN said its intervention reflects concern for victims of violence across the country and a desire to amplify the voices of affected communities.

Church Rejects Political Alignment Claims

Bishop Oke emphasized that the PFN is not aligned with any political party, noting that its membership spans across Nigeria’s political spectrum.

He insisted the church’s intervention is moral rather than political, aimed solely at protecting human lives and restoring national peace.

Humanitarian Response on the Ground

Beyond advocacy, the PFN says its member churches are actively involved in humanitarian relief across conflict-affected regions.

Reported interventions include:

  • Distribution of food and relief materials to IDP camps
  • Reconstruction of destroyed homes and places of worship
  • Large-scale logistics support to displaced communities

The PFN claims that some state chapters have delivered multiple trailer loads of food supplies to internally displaced persons, particularly in the Middle Belt.

However, Bishop Oke said many of these efforts are intentionally not publicized in order to maintain spiritual humility.

Call for Government Action and International Support

The PFN urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to secure citizens, warning that failure to act decisively could further destabilize the country.

It also suggested that Nigeria may need to consider international partnerships if domestic capacity proves insufficient to end the violence.

The church reiterated that its primary role remains advocacy, prayer, and humanitarian support, not armed intervention.

Bishop Wale Oke’s remarks add to growing pressure on Nigeria’s leadership over its handling of insecurity, particularly as attacks, abductions, and rural displacement continue across multiple regions.

The PFN’s position reflects both a spiritual and civic alarm over what it describes as a deteriorating national condition, urging urgent and decisive government action beyond political considerations.

As insecurity persists, the tension between governance priorities and public safety demands is expected to remain a central national debate.
