The Federal Capital Territory Administration has signalled readiness to partner with Finland to transform Abuja into a modern, sustainable smart city.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike announced the initiative on March 31, 2026, during a courtesy meeting with the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Her Excellency Sanna Selin, in Abuja.

Minister Wike emphasised infrastructure, agriculture, and waste management as priority areas for international collaboration, highlighting Finland’s strength in green technology and digital solutions.

“As a city, we are willing to cooperate with sister cities of other countries to see how we can partner in infrastructure and agriculture,” Wike said. “You have already said you are willing to support smart city technology and clean energy, and we will be glad to partner for mutual benefit.”

Wike also expressed interest in a study visit to Finland to learn from the country’s urban planning and waste management models. He stressed the importance of engaging firms with capacity to manage Abuja’s waste efficiently, describing it as “very key for us.”

Addressing security concerns for the diplomatic community, the Minister reaffirmed Abuja’s improved safety, noting that ongoing construction and infrastructural growth reflect the city’s stability.

Ambassador Selin commended the FCT Administration for its infrastructural investments and security measures. She confirmed Finland’s readiness to provide expertise in renewable energy, sustainable construction, and digital services to support Abuja’s urban development.

“Finland recognizes the FCTA’s ongoing infrastructure investment and is ready to offer its expertise in planning, clean energy solutions, and sustainable constructions to bring about rapid urban development in Abuja,” the Ambassador said.

The proposed partnership focuses on integrating digital infrastructure, clean energy solutions, and sustainable urban planning to enhance Abuja’s livability and economic competitiveness.
