AMOKPALA, Oko, Anambra State — July 22, 2026

A major rescue operation is underway in Amokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, after the collapse of a three-storey building identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, where emergency responders have recovered the body of a female victim believed to be a student while continuing efforts to rescue others feared trapped beneath the rubble.

Rescue officials also confirmed that the body of a young man, also believed to be a student, has been located inside the collapsed structure but had not yet been recovered as of the latest update due to the complexity of the operation.

The incident, which occurred late Sunday night, has thrown the university community and surrounding neighbourhood into mourning, raising fresh concerns about the structural integrity of privately owned student hostels and compliance with building safety regulations across Anambra State.

Emergency Agencies Mount Coordinated Rescue Operation

A combined emergency response team comprising the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigerian Red Cross Society, Anambra State Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, other security agencies and operatives of the Operation Udo Ga-Achi security outfit has maintained a continuous rescue operation at the disaster site.

Heavy-duty excavators and specialised rescue equipment have been deployed to carefully remove layers of concrete and twisted metal while rescuers search for survivors and recover victims.

Officials said the operation is being carried out cautiously to avoid triggering further collapse that could endanger rescue workers or anyone still trapped beneath the debris.

Victims Identified as Students

According to preliminary information from emergency officials, the building served primarily as student accommodation and was occupied at the time of the collapse.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mrs. Ndidi Omega, confirmed that the body of a female victim had been recovered.

She also disclosed that rescuers had located another victim—a young man believed to be a student—whose body remained trapped beneath sections of the collapsed building awaiting safe recovery.

Earlier in the rescue operation, three injured occupants were successfully pulled from the rubble and transported to hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims pending notification of their families.

Scene Filled With Anxiety as Families Await News

The atmosphere around the collapsed building remains tense as relatives, fellow students, residents and sympathisers gather near the scene hoping for positive news.

Many watched silently as excavators lifted concrete slabs while rescue workers searched methodically through the debris.

Security personnel have established a protective perimeter around the site to prevent interference and ensure emergency responders can operate without obstruction.

Officials are also working to determine the total number of occupants who were inside the building when it collapsed.

Authorities Vow to Continue Search

Mrs. Omega assured residents that rescue efforts would continue until every section of the collapsed structure had been thoroughly searched.

She said emergency teams remain committed to ensuring that no victim is left beneath the debris.

“Our priority is to complete the search operation and account for everyone who may have been inside the building,” emergency officials indicated.

Police Appeal for Calm

The Nigeria Police Force appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours capable of causing unnecessary panic.

Police urged residents to rely only on verified information released by emergency management agencies while rescue operations continue.

Authorities also requested members of the public to stay away from restricted areas to enable rescue personnel to carry out their duties safely and efficiently.

Officials promised that additional updates would be released as more information becomes available.

Investigative Focus: Questions Over Building Safety

The collapse has once again drawn attention to concerns surrounding the safety of residential buildings, particularly private student hostels in rapidly growing university communities.

Structural engineers and urban planning experts have repeatedly warned about:

  • Poor compliance with approved building standards;
  • Inadequate supervision during construction;
  • Use of substandard building materials;
  • Weak enforcement of development control regulations;
  • Conversion of residential buildings into high-density hostels without adequate structural assessment.

Although the precise cause of the collapse has yet to be officially determined, experts say a comprehensive structural investigation will be necessary to establish whether negligence, design defects, construction failures or other factors contributed to the tragedy.

Growing Demand for Accountability

The latest disaster is expected to intensify calls for stricter enforcement of building regulations across Nigeria.

Civil society organisations and professional bodies have consistently urged state governments to conduct routine integrity assessments of multi-storey buildings, particularly those housing large numbers of students and tenants.

Families affected by the tragedy are also expected to demand accountability if investigations reveal that regulatory failures contributed to the collapse.

As rescue workers continue searching through the wreckage of the collapsed Elite Five Star Lodge, hope and grief remain intertwined for families anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.

With one female victim confirmed dead, another body located beneath the rubble and several survivors already hospitalised, attention is now shifting toward determining what caused the collapse and whether it could have been prevented.

The findings of the expected structural investigation may prove critical in strengthening building safety standards and preventing similar tragedies in university communities across Nigeria.
