The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on February 23, 2026, served as Special Guest of Honour at the official handover of 54 construction equipment to the 18 Local Government Areas of Edo State.

The initiative, led by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, is aimed at strengthening infrastructure delivery at the grassroots level.

The ceremony marked a coordinated effort by the Edo State Government to decentralise infrastructure development by empowering local councils with operational tools.

Each of the 18 LGAs received construction equipment intended to support road maintenance, environmental management, and other public works within their jurisdictions.

Governor Okpebholo said the distribution aligns with his administration’s focus on improving service delivery and accelerating development across rural and urban communities.

Wike’s presence underscored intergovernmental collaboration, with the FCT Minister highlighting the importance of equipping local authorities to drive sustainable infrastructure growth.

The event attracted key political stakeholders and party leaders from across the South-South region and beyond.

Among the dignitaries present were former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, as well as Senators Allwell Onyesoh, Magnus Abe, and Olaka Nwogu.

Also in attendance was the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Vice Chairman, South-South, Chief Dan Obih, alongside other political figures.

Strengthening Local Governance Capacity

The equipment handover is expected to reduce reliance on external contractors for minor infrastructure projects, enabling faster response to community needs.

Analysts say such decentralised asset distribution can improve efficiency and accountability if properly managed by local councils.

Political Signals and Regional Collaboration

The presence of high-profile political figures across party lines reflects ongoing efforts to build alliances and maintain influence within the South-South political landscape.

Observers note that infrastructure-focused engagements are increasingly being used as platforms for political coordination ahead of future electoral cycles.

The handover signals a shift toward empowering local governments as frontline infrastructure managers. If sustained, it could improve service delivery and reduce project delays. However, outcomes will depend on maintenance culture, oversight, and transparency at the council level.
