The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate extension of the ongoing Arterial Road S1 project in Kaura District to connect directly with Arterial Road S20 (Oladipo Diya Way), a move aimed at improving connectivity, unlocking new economic opportunities and accelerating urban development across the nation’s capital.
The directive, issued during an inspection tour of the project on Friday, comes as the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) intensifies efforts to deliver critical infrastructure before the end of 2026.
The latest decision signals the administration’s determination to maximise the economic value of major road projects by ensuring they are fully integrated into Abuja’s expanding transport network rather than existing as isolated corridors.
Strategic Road Project Gets Expanded Scope
Inspecting construction work in Kaura District, Wike instructed the contractor to immediately incorporate the extension into the existing project.
According to the Minister, the original phase of the project primarily focused on constructing the bridge component.
However, he said extending the road to connect directly with Oladipo Diya Way would significantly increase its economic and transportation value.
“The first segment of this road involved building the bridge, but we have directed that it be extended to link directly with Oladipo Diya Road. I have put pressure on the contractor to include this extension so the project achieves its full impact,” Wike said.
Urban planners note that linking arterial roads enhances traffic circulation, reduces travel time and improves access to developing districts.
Project Designed to Unlock Kaura District
The 2.4-kilometre Arterial Road S1 was originally flagged off in September 2025 to connect the Fire Service Station in Kaura District with Ring Road II, improving emergency response capacity while supporting residential and commercial expansion.
The project also includes a three-span bridge, which the Minister confirmed has already been completed.
Infrastructure experts say the road is expected to become one of the key transportation corridors serving the rapidly growing southern axis of Abuja.
The extension to Oladipo Diya Way is expected to provide an additional outlet for commuters while reducing pressure on existing roads.
Road Network Expected to Drive Economic Growth
Beyond easing traffic congestion, Wike argued that strategic road construction serves as a catalyst for broader economic development.
According to him, improved accessibility often triggers increased private-sector investment, particularly in housing and commercial developments.
“This road is very key, very important, and you can see that at the end of the day, when it is completed, it will change the topography and landscape of this area, and the other beneficiaries are the real estate developers,” the Minister stated.
The Minister observed that road construction has historically attracted investors to previously undeveloped districts across Abuja, creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic activities.
“Anywhere developers see roads, you can see buildings coming up. That is good because it creates jobs for people.”

Property analysts say improved infrastructure typically increases land values, attracts residential estates and encourages commercial investments, particularly in emerging districts such as Kaura.
Government Assures Contractors of Timely Funding
Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of construction, describing the progress recorded so far as encouraging.
He assured contractors that the FCT Administration remains committed to honouring its financial obligations to avoid delays that have historically affected public infrastructure projects.
According to the Minister, prompt payment remains one of the administration’s priorities to ensure contractors maintain construction schedules and deliver projects within agreed timelines.
The FCTA has repeatedly stated that restoring confidence between government and contractors is essential to accelerating infrastructure delivery across the Federal Capital Territory.
December Completion Target Remains Intact
Despite the newly approved extension, the Minister maintained that the project remains on schedule for completion before the end of 2026.
The road forms part of several strategic transportation projects being undertaken simultaneously by the FCTA to improve mobility, reduce congestion and support Abuja’s long-term urban master plan.
Officials believe the completion of the corridor will strengthen connectivity between Kaura District and adjoining districts while enhancing access to critical public institutions and residential communities.
